Meeting a different culture is one of the most common drives to travel. A different environment, language, buildings, history, food, and so on. Exploring local culture makes you richer. By ResiRest, you can get a taste of real local life in an easy way. Not by looking around! Rather, we invite you to be part of it, live it. So, you can experience true culture by small matters, at the home of local people. Let us give you two examples:
Guatemala: avocados grow in trees
“Now we know that avocados grow in trees”, tell Laura and Bernd. They learned this at the vegetable- and fruit garden of Carolina in Antigua. “At the end of our visit, we walk with Carolina and her children through her garden. We can tell she’s very proud of it. We come by large avocado trees, all sorts of herbs, and exotic fruit.”
Before visiting the garden, there was a big lunch. “Two of Carolinas children pick us up at the meeting point. We walk to the families’ house. That appears to be humble, yet with a large garden around. We sit together at the kitchen table and get served tasty ‘Pacaya’. This is a palm flower dish with tomato sauce. During lunch, we speak about cooking and culture. Afterward, we play some games with the kids.”
Want to learn more? Laura and Bernd wrote a blog post about their visit, and about many other interesting travel topics as well. Their website www.wat-erleben.de is written in German. Check on Instagram @wat.erleben for pictures & posts in English.
Colombia: not an easy game to play
In Medellín, Colombia, Anne pays a visit to Lenis. Cleverly, Lenis makes her husband do the cooking this evening. So, the two ladies have plenty of time to chat about the Colombian life. After dinner, Anne has to try a typical Colombian game. How will that work out?!
Balero (or coca balero) is a very traditional, Colombian game. It’s a juggling toy. The objective is to insert a thin axis of the stem into the hole of the mallet. Well, maybe easy for trained Colombians, yet for foreigners, it may take some time to manage this. If you like a challenge, you are welcome at Lenis’ place to give it a try!
