There is no way to visit Sal without eating Cachupa. Cachupa is a famous dish. This one-pot meal you can prepare in many ways. Corn with some different beans are the main ingredients. Also, vegetables and spices are always present. For the simple version of cachupa, this is it. Rather plain, yet very tasty. And, it’s healthy too. The corn, beans and veggies are severely nutritious.
Meat is rather expensive on Sal. On the contrary, fish is more available and more affordable. Therefore, the Capeverdeans mostly add fish to the cachupa. Or, if you don’t eat meat or fish, they can make an omelet out of eggs for you. Eather way no matter how you eat it, eating cachupa is a wonderful experience.
Especially when you eat it the real local way. That’s homemade by a traditional recipe, together with a local family in their house. For example, join Euriza for lunch. Meet Crysmela in Santa Maria
It’s an understatement to say that people in Cape Verde are not rich. You can see it by the way they live. Like Crysmela and her family. With six people they share a small apartment in Santa Maria. The tiny kitchen is always in use. For instance to make feijoda. This is an awesome bean stew because slow cooking makes the flavors come to full presence.
Crysmela and her family are very hospitable. They prepare the food with dedication. Since the apartment is small, it is very cozy. Be welcome and let this house be a home for you a couple of hours. This is another great possibility for you to get a real taste of local life!
If you like fish on your plate, Cape Verde offers you many options. One outstanding option is a fish barbecue on the beach. Pure and simple, the fish from the grill is very tasty! Local fisherman Stephen catches many fine fish for you. Together with Stephen and his family, you enjoy the beach barbecue Cape Verde style, which is pretty relaxed!
