We are a bit nervous upon arrival at the meeting point: San Javier metro station in Medellin. We are looking forward meeting our host family for the evening and curious about the dynamics. As we arrive, Teresa and her daughter Vanessa are already waiting for us. Accompanied by their little dog, which immediately breaks the ice.
Together we take a taxi to their house. It’s in a a local neighbourhood which is rarely visited by tourists. We meet up with the entire family. Their family home is cosy and it takes us just seconds to feel at home. While we drink a fresh fruit juice together we all introduce ourselves. Soon we start talking about daily life in Medellin, their neighbourhood and personal interests. The family is very keen to learn about our countries; Germany and the Netherlands.
All about sharing food
Although we are not exactly master chefs, we do like lending a hand in the kitchen. On the menu today is Bandeja Paisa. It’s a traditional meal of de Antioquia region. There are quite some ingredients: rice, beans, chicharron, meat, pork, plantain, egg, and avocado. All prepared on just two stoves. This delicious Bandeja Paisa is not comparable to any meal we ate at restaurants. We truly taste it´s a fresh home cooked meal prepared with love. For dessert we prepare ´arroz con leche´; rice cooked in milk, sugarcane so called panela and cinnamon. A quarter of the panela disk is used. Making it a wonderful, sweet and warm desert (luckily we are not on a diet).
Spending time with the family
After we finish eating our meals it’s time to play a game with the entire family. We brought Yenga with us to play together.
It´s a great success! The kids are nervously removing the blocks from the ever growing Yenga tower, and cheer loudly when they succeed. As it darkens outside we go to the family´s backyard and watch the city lights. The view over Communa 13 and the rest of the city is amazing. This is something you definitely have to experience!
It was a blast
When it is time to return to our hostel, the family accompanied us to the bus. During the walk they tell about the street art in this area. All family members are incredibly sweet and hospitable! We really felt like locals. Having dinner with this family has proven a lovely and unforgettable experience!
