Dinner visit Friday February 8th 2019, Belén, Medellin. Lenis and Camilio are a loving and very welcoming couple. They live in one of Medellin´s biggest neighbourhoods Belén. In a new apartment on the fourth floor, overseeing the city of Medellin.
The hosts: Lenis and Camilio
Both Lenis and Camilio love cooking and sharing stories. Lenis enjoys to cook vegan and grows her own herbs on the balcony. Camilio is more the meat kind of person. He shares many recipes he likes. Especially the ground beef, mango and peanut-combination is a must eat according to him.
Lenis and Camilio are great hosts. Although both of them just speak a little English, they are able to connect and communicate fluently with their guests. Sometimes using google translate. They have great interest in the cultures of their guests. And really like to get to know everyone personally.
A dinner and more
During dinner we exchange many topics. Daily Colombian life, city life, health care, jobs, violence, insecurity, and opportunities. Lenis and Camilio are very keen to know how we experience their country and culture. They exchange many exciting tales about Colombian culture, history, music, the local slang, people and so on.
The veggie burger Lenis prepares is delicious and its presentation wonderful. Together with patacones (fried and flattened plantains, a true Colombian salty delicatessen) and some lulo juice (Colombian fruit, looks like a kiwi tastes like no other fruit). Delicious, healthy and it all taste even better in great company.
Afterward, Lenis and Camilio prepare a small dessert. This is ‘obleas’. The Colombian version of waffles, with dulce de leche (kind of caramel) and fresh cheese. Each guest gets to prepare their own oblea. So, we are all able to learn the art of oblea making.
After the dessert, Camilio challenges us to play ´balero´. The antique wooden game used to be of his grandfather. A lost tradition in which one has to catch a wooden piece through a hole on the bottom with a wooden stick. Seems an easy task, though it takes an expert to get it right in one try.
Experience it yourself in Medellin
A wonderful evening and exchange. Awesome personal experience being part of a local family. You get to know an amazing couple and learn a lot of new facts about Colombia! Therefore definitely recommended!
