Located in the north west of Africa, yet here you breathe the mysterious atmosphere like the middle east. Morocco has the best of both Africa and western Asia captured in one country. The amazing scenery makes it picture perfect. And “movie perfect” as well. That’s why the movie industry knows its way to Morocco!
“We will always have Paris”
A classic movie: Casablanca. Yet it is not recorded in Morocco! During the recordings, World War ll made the situation too unstable. So this famous Moroccan movie is shot in America. Furthermore, the city view is rather different nowadays. For example, the Hassan ll Mosque dominates the skyline now. So enjoy modern Casablanca, and travel along to see the original movie hotspots!
Charming Fint oasis
For instance, visit the Fint oasis near Ouarzazate. Large parts of multiple awards winning Babel are shot here. You can almost feel the heat of the desert when watching this film with Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchett. If you make a trip across Morocco, this filmset is a nice place to visit. The desert is really rough. The more surprising the oasis you come by to see the village where Babel is shot.
It is a small oasis, therefore quite charming. The village is not much more than some ruins. Moreover, the stories by the local guide make it special. Let him tell you about his relatives who engaged in Babel. Just two handshakes apart from Brad and Kate, how cool is that!
Egyptian style dessert and movies
For the best sand desert, you go the Ouarzazate region too. And if you like a luxury feeling: book a hotel with a desert view pool. First, you take a swim, later on, take a firm walk to the top of a dune. The sunset turns the sand into amazing colors. Of course, you can also ride the ship of the desert here. Certainly, by a camel ride, you reach the top more easily.
Close to this idyllic place you find the Atlas studios. Take a tour inside to discover all kinds of artifacts. Let the decors and the many relics of ‘Egyptian’ movies surprise you. Now you know how movie makers fool you!
Essaouira… or should we say Astapor?
The old town of Essaouira is known for its fortified walls and the relaxed atmosphere. It’s not without reason that scenes of the famous series of Games of Thrones are shot here. Essaouira or Astapor in the series, features as the city on Slaver’s Bay.
If you are traveling Morocco, make sure you visit vivid Essaouira. And see for yourself the beautiful medina. Experience the iconic view you have from the fort and view its harbor with the famous blue fishing boats. Pose for a snapshot near the huge canons, and feel like a true movie star.
