To many travelers, their stay in Trincomalee is about the beach & watching whales. Too bad, because Trinco offers so much more! In this article, Sri Lankan Yaathav gives his best local tips to you. So, read all about the real Trincomalee highlights, and explore more! Three insider tips, coming up!
Trincomalee highlights 1: colorful Hindu temples
“Why do the people only like Trinco for the beach?” Yaathav really doesn’t understand. He shows us around the city. Near Maler’s place, we come across beautiful Hindu temples. “A cultural diamond”, according to Yathaav.
If you like some color in your Sri Lankan pictures, get your camera ready, because these temples are painted in bright colors. The stories in the sculptures and paintings are pretty wild. Sometimes violent, and always overwhelming. You can easily spend hours wandering and still discover some details you overlooked earlier.
Did you know? In Sri Lanka there are about three million Hindu people. So, to understand the Sri Lankan culture, it’s a must to look into Hinduism.
Trincomalee highlights 2: lunch at Sivalingham’s house
To get a closer understanding of Hinduism, perhaps the best way is to meet Hindu people. In Trincomalee, some families open the doors of their homes to you. You can get a taste of local life. And, yummy, a taste of the Hindu cuisine as wel.
With Yathaav, we join Sivalingham for lunch. This is really a divine woman. For instance, we learn that every year she goes on a foot pilgrimage. Yet, most of the time she takes care of her (grand)children. Together, we share an excessive lunch as you can only get in Sri Lanka. Countless small bowls containing curries and veggies. Of course, accompanied by plenty of rice. Sivalingam cooks with love and skills and proves that’s a perfect combination. Also, we get the opportunity to learn to eat it the local way. With the fingers and thumb of our right hands that is. By observing our local company, we quickly develop our skills.
In contrast to the temples, this is so calm. We just sit, eat, and chat in a regular Sri Lankan house. Because it’s such a warm and personal experience, we value it deeply. Yet, we have to say goodbye to Silvalingam. Now, we are off to the next hotspot of Trinco.
Trincomalee highlights 3: the harbour area
One of the largest natural harbors in the world! This is the place to be if you like to see how the freshly caught fish is brought in. If you have some room left in your belly after lunch, take a bite! Else, just watch the busy come and go of the fishermen. Furthermore, see how the fish is processed. Like some are being left on the beach to dry, others are directly cut into pieces. Surrounded by the ocean, fishing if of main importance to the Sri Lankan people. That’s why you should take a look at all the activity at the harbor: our highlight number three!
